STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team opened conference play in winning fashion by downing the Catamounts of Western Carolina, 5-1. Play began on Thursday, but rain pushed the completion of the match to Friday morning.
The Eagles (3-4) received solid singles play across the board to propel them to victory. Cameron Williams (Norcross, Ga.) and Alexandra Langmo (Boca Raton, Fla.) won their matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles without dropping a game by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) gave the team their third win of the match with a 6-0, 6-3, win at No. 4 singles. Rain then suspended match play until the following morning. Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) clinched the match victory for the Eagles with a 6-1, 6-0, victory at No. 1 singles. Alexis Prickett (Charleston, S.C.) pulled through in a tight match to win at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) fought hard as well but came up just short, falling in a third-set match tiebreaker by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 10-8. Doubles play was canceled due to the rain and the match's outcome already having been decided.
The Eagles will look to build a winning streak later today when they take the courts against MEAC rival Florida A&M. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. at Hanner Tennis Complex.
