STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team will look to get back on the right track when they return home to host Elon on Monday afternoon. Play is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at Hanner Tennis Complex.
The Eagles (1-14, 0-4 SoCon) have endured several unfortunate outcomes on the season. They've fought hard and been competitive in every match but just haven't been able to string together wins consistently to this point in the season. They look for the upcoming homestand to reverse this trend. The Eagles are led by the tandem of Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Andrew Dromsky (Martinez, Ga.), whose impressive doubles play has led to victories in four of the last five matches. The pair also ranks first and second on the squad in singles wins. Dromsky recorded a three-set victory over Chattanooga on Thursday, while Marco Osorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) did the same at Samford on Saturday.
The Elon Phoenix are 6-8 on the season with a 3-1 mark in SoCon play. They've lost to College of Charleston, defeated the Citadel and won 4-3 over both Chattanooga and Davidson. Freshman Jordan Kaufman engineered three-set wins in the decisive match of both victories. Their record includes losses to three ranked foes: Georgia State, Wake Forest, and Princeton. The Phoenix are the reigning regular season co-champions of the SoCon, as they went 9-1 in league play and shared the title with College of Charleston. Head Coach Michael Leonard was named SoCon Coach of the Year for the third time in his career, while current #1 singles player Cameron Silverman was named SoCon Freshman of the Year. Garrido and Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands) each recorded singles victories over the Phoenix in 2010, but the Eagles have lost each of the last four meetings including a 6-1 loss last season.
