Women's Tennis Downed by Samford on the Road

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team fought hard but was unable to escape Birmingham with a victory against conference rival Samford. The Eagles fell, 5-2, in Saturday afternoon's affair.
The Eagles (4-6, 1-1 SoCon) fell behind early in the match when they lost the doubles point. Alessandra Dzuba (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Cameron Williams (Norcross, Ga.) were downed at No. 3 doubles to give the lead to the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs clinched the doubles point when Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) and Alexis Prickett (Charleston, S.C.) fell by an 8-5 score at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles tandem of Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) gave the Eagles their lone win in doubles play, 8-6, improving the combo's record to 4-0 on the season.
The Bulldogs' win of the doubles point carried over into singles play. Kitchen and Prickett lost at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. The match was clinched when Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) fell at No. 4 singles. The Bulldogs gained their fifth point of the afternoon when Williams was downed at No. 5 singles. Maffett and Garrido both grinded out victories in seesaw affairs to give the Eagles their two points on the day. Maffett won at No. 6 singles by a score of 6-1, 3-6, 11-9, while Garrido prevailed at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 13-11.
The Eagles will conclude their weekend road trip on Sunday when they take the courts against another conference rival, Chattanooga. Matches are slated to begin at noon.
