STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team will look to get back to its winning ways when it takes the courts again this weekend. The GPS is set for Greenville, North Carolina, as the Eagles dual against Liberty on Saturday at 11 a.m. and East Carolina on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Eagles (1-4) are glad to be facing teams from outside the state of Florida. They defeated Mercer in the season opener but have lost four consecutive matches to teams from the Sunshine State. Senior Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) leads the Eagles in singles action with two wins on the season while alternating between the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Garrido is also tied for the team lead with two doubles victories, accompanied by Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands) and freshmen Kyle Hoffman (Sarasota, Fla.) and Andrew Dromsky (Martinez, Ga.).
“We had a tough road trip in Florida in terms of results, but we learned a lot and we competed well,” said Head Coach Nick Zieziula. “We need to come out this weekend with the same fight and make better decisions when the ball is on our racket with the lead. We have a lot of freshmen who are soaking up some great match experience early in the season and they are learning fast.”
The Liberty Flames are 2-1 on the young season. The Eagles pulled out a 4-3 win in Statesboro in last year's contest against their Big South foes. Garrido and Verdam contributed two of the singles victories for the Eagles, with Verdam's being the match-clincher.
East Carolina is off to an impressive 5-2 start on the season. Sunday's match will mark the first ever meeting between the Eagles and the Pirates out of C-USA.
