Women?s Tennis Hits the Road Again for Weekend

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team begins another road trip when they hit the courts this weekend against Presbyterian College and Mercer. First serve against the Blue Hose is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. in Clinton, S.C. The trip concludes in Macon against the Bears on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Eagles are coming off a South Carolina swing in which they competed well but came out on the losing end against Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina. The team is led by sophomore Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) who is a perfect 4-0 on the season while playing No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles with partner Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.). Freshman Cameron Williams (Norcross, Ga.) is in the win column in singles play as well as the tandem of Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) and Alexis Prickett (Charleston, S.C.) in doubles.
“The team has been working hard in preparation for our upcoming matches against PC and Mercer,” said Head Coach Amy Bonner. “I am proud of the way the team turned last weekend into a positive and is looking forward to a strong performance this weekend. I'm encouraged by my upperclassmen leading the way and helping guide our team to rebounding after two tough losses.”
Big South foe Presbyterian College is 0-1 on the season under first-year head coach Catherine Dunagan. Georgia Southern sports a 4-1 all-time record against the Blue Hose, the last of which was a win in 2008.
The Mercer Bears out of the Atlantic Sun Conference begin their season on Friday against Alabama State. The Eagles have fared well against the Bears in the past with an all-time mark of 24-4. The last meeting was in 2010 when Maffett, then a freshman, notched wins at singles and doubles to clinch the match for the Eagles.
