Second-Half Drought Too Much For GSU to Overcome

Cullowhee, N.C. - A 16-2 run to start the second half proved to be too much for The Georgia Southern Lady Eagles to overcome in a 55-46 loss to the Western Carolina Catamounts. GSU rallied to cut the deficit to three, but could not erase a 15 point lead.
Samantha Williams (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the Lady Eagles with 11 points in 19 minutes, and Meredyth Frye (Fredericksburg, Va.) added 9 points in 36 minutes. Nine players scored as the Lady Eagles connected on 15 of 47 field goals, and shot 46 percent from three. Turnovers and offensive rebounding eventually doomed GSU. Seventeen turnovers and 17 offensive boards led to 26 WCU points. The Catamounts held a 43-34 edge over Georgia Southern for the game.
Diamond Honeycutt hit a three to give Western a 24-22 lead with 19:32 in the second half, and the Catamounts never looked back. The Lady Eagles went on a 6:44 drought, during the 16-2 run, that put them behind by 15 with 11:47 remaining. A pair of free throws by Meredith Frye broke the scoreless streak. The free throws sparked an 8-0 run which ended on an Anna Claire Knight (Dublin, Ga.) three-point basket.
The Lady Eagles cut the lead to three on a MiMi DuBose (Jefferson, Ga.) three pointer with 6:25 remaining but were unable to get over the hump. Western Carolina went a perfect 10 of 10 from the charity stripe in the second half to close the game.
A balanced attack for the Lady Eagles gave them an early lead to begin the game. Williams and Briana Scott (Dumfries, Va.) led the team with four points each in the first half as GSU went into the break with a 22-21 lead over WCU.
The Lady Eagles will close out the 2012 regular season at Furman on Monday at 7 p.m.
