STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team will play host for the first time in the newly renovated Hanner Tennis Complex on Saturday. The morning session in Statesboro will begin at 9 a.m. against South Carolina State. A match between the men's teams of the schools will follow at 9:30 a.m.
“We are looking forward to our home opener against South Carolina State,” said Head Coach Amy Bonner. “After being on the road the past few weeks, we are looking forward to playing on our new home courts. The team has been working hard in making preparations for our upcoming match, and we can't wait to enjoy the new facility for the first time.”
The Eagles (2-2) are looking to build off back-to-back road wins against Presbyterian College and Mercer. The team has been led by the stellar play of sophomores Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.). The partners are a perfect 3-0 on the season in doubles, and they're also each undefeated in singles play. Kitchen is 2-0 in action at No. 3 singles and Garrido is 4-0 at No. 1 singles, while Garrido has also picked up a fourth doubles victory when partnering with Mimi Bollaci (Atlanta, Ga.). Garrido was recently named the SoCon Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the first week of the 2012 season. Cameron Williams (Norcross, Ga.) has started her freshman campaign strongly by posting a 3-1 record in singles and 2-0 record in doubles with partner Taylor Jones (Warner Robins, Ga.). Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) has also posted a solid 2-2 record in singles play. Her record is matched by the tandem of Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) and Alexis Prickett (Charleston, S.C.) at #1 doubles.
The South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs (3-0) hail from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. They have won the MEAC championship in seven consecutive years, posting an overall record of 16-2 last season. The Eagles and Lady Bulldogs are 1-1 all-time and were slated to play last season, but the contest was canceled due to rain.
