Softball Travels to USF Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Softball puts its 4-3 overall record on the line this weekend with four games at the USF Invitational. The Eagles open the weekend on Friday afternoon against Arkansas at 2:15 p.m. Georgia Southern is coming off a doubleheader split against Georgia State on Wednesday afternoon in the 2012 home opener.
Against Georgia State, the Eagles had a pair solid outing despite the 1-1 record. Sarah Purvis (Warner Robins, Ga.) took the hard luck loss in game one despite tossing two-hitter. One Georgia State run in the third inning was the difference as Purvis struck out nine Panther batters in the game.
In game two, Georgia Southern got a clutch three-run double in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead off the bat of Andrea Tarashuk (Flemington, N.J.) she scored later in the frame to account for the 4-1 Georgia Southern victory. In the circle, freshman Brooke Red (Warner Robins, Ga.) got her first career victory, going six innings and scattering three hits in the game.
Tarashuk leads all Eagle batters with a .429 batting average and five doubles. She has also knocked in seven runs with a .667 slugging percentage. Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) hit .417 in the season's first seven games after being named SoCon Preseason Player of the Year by the league's head coaches.
This will be USF's second tournament at home after finishing 3-1 last weekend with the only loss coming against No. 1 Florida. Arkansas returns to action after a 4-1 finish to win the Getterman Classic in Waco, Texas. The Razorbacks defeated the host, No. 7 Baylor, in the tournament. Drake traveled to Iowa State last weekend and went 2-2 with wins over Illinois and Green Bay. The USF Invitational will be the first appearance on the diamond for Wisconsin this season.
Next weekend, Georgia Southern plays host to the Eagle Classic at Eagle Field. The Eagles face Jacksonville State and Albany on Friday, February 24th to close the opening day of play. A complete schedule of games can be found on the Softball schedule at GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com.
