STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern sophomore Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) has been named the first Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the 2012 spring season. The Vigo, Spain native is a perfect 8-0 to start the season while playing No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles with Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Mimi Bollaci (Atlanta, Ga.).
"It is great that the conference has given Paola this honor,” said Head Coach Amy Bonner. “She has worked hard both in the classroom and on the court since she's arrived. She has gotten off to a strong start this season and contributed to our team not only with wins but with leadership. I am impressed with her daily that she is able to come to another country and excel in all areas.”
Garrido has led the Eagles to a 2-2 record to start the season. She has dropped only one set while recording singles victories over Mercer's Jennifer Lada (6-1,6-4), Presbyterian College's Paige Oelke (6-3, 6-2), Coastal Carolina's Miki Bunea (6-1, 6-4), and Charleston Southern's Olga Makhova (1-6, 6-4, 10-6), who is a former two-time Big South Conference Player of the Year. Garrido is 3-0 in doubles play when partnering with Kitchen and also notched a win with Bollaci against Presbyterian.
Garrido's brother, Alain, is a senior who stars for the Men's Tennis team.
