Statesboro, Ga. - The Eagles will open the spring season at the Sun Trust Gator Invitational. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, and Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Mark Bostick Golf Course on the campus of the University of Florida. The teams will open with 36 holes on Saturday teeing off at 8 a.m., and close the tournament with 18 holes on Sunday.
GSU will face a strong field this weekend. Nine of the 14 teams either ranked or received votes in the latest Golfworld/Nike Golf Division I coaches poll. At the top are Arkansas (3), Auburn (4) and North Florida (7), followed by Florida State (20) and UCF (22). The rest of the field includes GSU, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Memphis, Mississippi State, South Alabama and the host Gators.
Competing in the team event for the Eagles will be freshmen Scott Wolfes (St. Simons Island, Ga.)and Zach Hartman (St. Simons Island, Ga.), junior Blake Olson (Pensacola, Fla.), senior Lewis Gruber (Tallahassee, Fla.) and redshirt freshman Matt Mierzejewski (Alpharetta, Ga.). And sophomore Hayden Anderson (Knoxville, Tenn.) will be playing individually.
The Eagles have annually begun their spring season at the Gator Invite for over a decade. GSU will look to continue the success of the fall, which saw the team take three top-five finishes. To win, Head Coach Larry Mays and the Eagles will have to dethrone the Gators, who have won the last eight Gator Invitationals.
