Women’s Tennis Has Successful Second Day at Augusta Challenge

STATESBORO, Ga. – All players won at least one match as the Georgia Women’s Tennis team soared to a near perfect record on day two of the Augusta Challenge in Augusta, Ga. All three doubles pairings won their doubles matches while five out of six Eagles finished the day with a perfect record.
The team kick-started the day with a perfect performance in the doubles, posting three wins in as many matches. In Flight A junior Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and classmate Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) beat Virginia Tech duo Emily Lauten and Kelly Williford with a score of 8-6. Senior-freshman duo Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) and Stephanie Woods (John’s Creek, Ga.) as well as sophomore pair Alexis Prickett (Charleston, S.C.) and Jordana Klein (Alphretta, Ga.) beat their Virginia Tech opponents 8-1 in the B and C flights.
“Doubles was a highlight of the day,” Head Coach Amy Bonner said. “We started the day off strong and carried that momentum into singles.”
The successful day continued as four out of five players each won both singles matches of the day with Garrido, Woods and Maffet beating their Virginia Tech and Wofford College opponents in straight sets in Flights A, C and E.
Klein showed perseverance in her first singles match of the day against Virginia Tech’s Williford as she came back in the third set from a 4-1 deficit to eventually win it 6-4.
“The team is gaining more and more confidence in themselves and their teammates and I'm excited about finishing the fall season on a high note,” said Bonner.
The team ends fall competition with one more round of doubles as well as one more singles match for each player in every flight.
