STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving team will close out the fall portion of their 2012-2013 schedule at the Wingate Fall Frenzy at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C. The meet is set to start at 10:00 a.m. on Friday and ends Sunday.
This weekend’s championship style meet will be Eagles’ first competitive event after a three week break.
"Our swimmers and divers have looked really good in training the past few weeks,” said Head Coach Nathan Kellogg. “This meet will be the first opportunity to see how we perform in a championship meet format, which is considerably different compared to dual meets. This will also be our first travel meet of the year, which we always look forward to.”
The Eagles will be competing against eight teams including fellow Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association members Gardner-Webb University and College of Charleston. The other participating schools are host Wingate University as well as Queens University, Catawba College, Pfeiffer University, LeNoir-Rhyne University and Mars Hill College. The men’s programs from those eight schools will also square off (see list of events below).
“There will be some very good competition from teams we face a lot and also from teams we have never raced before,” Kellogg said. “We need to compete as a team and if we do that then I certainly expect us to have our best performances so far this season at this meet."
Last time in the water, the Eagles won 11 different events to post dual meet victories over the Savannah College of Art & Design and Davis & Elkins. The Eagles put in a great team effort as nine different athletes placed first.
Georgia Southern received first place finishes from Amanda Macchio in the 1-meter dive (personal best of 236.77), Sara Meisenhelder in the 3-meter dive (249.97), Christina Moran in the 100 back (58.10) and 200 back (personal best of 2:05.45), Elaina Lanson in the 50 free (23.68) and 100 free (52.31), Kristen Bates in the 100 breast (1:04.86), Amber Juncker in the 1000 free (10:37.64), Rikki Babuka in the 200 breast (2:25.91) and Kylee Parsons in the 500 free (5:10.88), as well as the 200 medley relay team of Moran, Lanson, Bates and Megan Heller (1:47.59).
After this weekend, the Eagles have over a month off before they compete against CCSA opponents Florida Gulf Coast and Liberty in Fort Myers, Fla. on Jan. 5 2013.
