Men’s Soccer Takes Second-Straight Win with 1-0 Victory at Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern Men’s Soccer took its second-straight win on Saturday evening with a 1-0 road win over Wofford. Joe Hughes took care of the scoring for the Eagles who improve to 2-2-1 in league play.
“I am extremely proud of the team tonight,” said head coach Kevin Kennedy. “Wofford is a very talented and organized team that has a lot of fight. This is a difficult place to come play, so we’re very happy to leave here with three points.”
With over an hour in the book, Georgia Southern’s Joe Hughes scored the breakthrough goal in the 67th minute of play. His fourth goal of the season came on a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the top-right corner of the net.
“After getting a terrific goal from Joe Hughes, Wofford really made us earn it,” said Kennedy. “They continued to push forward and we had to withstand a lot of pressure down the stretch.”
The Eagle defense took over from there, pitching the team’s third shutout of the season. Wofford out-shot the Eagles 19-9 in the match, but it was goalkeeper Neal Bates that made 10 saves in the contest, matching the season-high for an Eagle netminder.
“Now we need to regroup and turn our focus to Furman in our home finale on Tuesday night,” added Kennedy.
Georgia Southern is back at Eagle Field on Tuesday evening for the 2012 home finale against Furman. The home finale starts under the lights at Eagle Field from 7 p.m.
