STATESBORO, Ga. – After a solid showing at home in the Georgia Southern Championships, the GSU Men’s Tennis team travels to Tallahassee for the ITA Southern Regional Championships, hosted by Florida State. Qualifications begin on Thursday with main draws in both singles and doubles starting on Friday. Finals of the tournament will be held on Monday.
“We’re excited go compete again,” said head coach Nick Zieziula. “Our guys got in a lot of match play at home and we learned a lot from those outings. Qualifying is going to be tough tomorrow, but the four guys we’ve got going for us are going to do what it takes to fill the draw of 64 with a lot of Georgia Southern Blue.”
Oliver Webb and Matthijs Verdam earned slots in the main singles draw which begins on Friday morning. Webb will play seventh-seeded Jordan Kelly-Houston from Florida State. Verdam faces South Florida’s Juan Acuna in the round of 64 at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
Four more Eagles will have to work to earn their way into the singles main draw by winning two matches in the qualification round on Thursday. In all, 36 players will battle for eight berths in the main draw. Alex Doherty faces Florida State’s Joao Gauer at 9 a.m. while Rayane Djouad takes on Dylan Gunning from Florida Gulf Coast. In the bottom half of the qualifications draw, Marco Osorio faces Georgia Tech’s Garrett Gordon at 11:30 a.m., followed by Andrew Dromsky facing Miami’s Jack Murphy at Noon.
In doubles play, the team of Verdam-Doherty faces Kennesaw State’s team of Menhofer-Theodor in the out-matches. Georgia Southern’s second team, the pair of Webb-Dromsky faces Florida’s van Overbeek-Johnson for a place in the round of 32.
Georgia Southern’s final pair, the team of Djouad and Osorio earned a bye into the round of 32 and faces the second-seeded team of Pasha-Brasseaux from Georgia.
