Men’s Soccer Returns to Action at Home Against UNCG

STATESBORO, Ga. – Just days after coming up just short against No. 20 Elon, Georgia Southern Men’s Soccer is back in action on Tuesday evening as UNCG comes to Eagle Field. The Eagles are in search of their first win in league play and a chance to avenge last season’s 5-0 loss to close the regular season.
On Friday night a stadium record 938 fans came out to see Georgia Southern’s first night game at Eagle Field. Despite falling behind 2-0 early, GSU tied the game in the second half, but surrendered a third goal in the 89th minute. In the final minute of regulation, Witt Carlisle scored his third goal of the year to force overtime. In overtime, Elon scored its fourth of the night to take the 4-3 win.
Joining Carlisle with three goals this year is Drew Ruggles who also scored against Elon as well as Reed Norton and Joe Hughes. Norton and Ruggles share the team lead with three assists each.
UNCG is 4-7-2 on the season with a 2-2 mark in league play with a 4-0 win over Davidson and a 1-0 win over Appalachian State. The Spartans, however, have lost their last three matches with a 2-0 loss to Clemson and overtime losses to Wofford (1-0) and College of Charleston (2-1) with both in overtime.
Hakan Ilhan has six goals and six assists this year, pacing the Spartan offense. Oddur Gudmundsson ranks second on the UNCG team with five goals. The Spartans have outscored opponents 21-19 this season with four shutouts for the defense.
Following Tuesday’s match Georgia Southern has a road contest against Wofford on Saturday night before hosting Furman in the 2012 home finale.
