STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Lady Eagles look to snap a four-game losing streak at the College of Charleston Cougars on Wednesday. GSU will have to make their shots count against one of the better rebounding teams in the Southern Conference when they tip-off from TD Arena at 7 p.m.
Meredyth Frye (Fredricksburg, Va.) leads Georgia Southern (5-12, 1-7) with 10.6 points and 5.2 rebounds a contest. The junior guard narrowly missed a double-double at UNCG on Sunday and has scored in double figures in six of the last seven games. She is averaging 12.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists during that seven-game stretch.
The Lady Eagles are averaging 2.7 more rebounds than last season, but College of Charleston (3-14, 2-6) ranks fourth in the SoCon in rebounding with 40.1 a game. The Cougars also excel at second-chance baskets and are third on the offensive glass with 14.6 a contest. Cathryn Hardy leads a Charleston offense, which averages below 50 points a contest, with 8.2 points per game. Latisha Harris follows her with 7.8 points and a team-high 8.0 rebounds per contest.
Charleston won a pair of low scoring contests last season, 40-39 in Charleston and 51-39 in Statesboro. GSU leads the all-time series 24-14 and won two of three games in 2009-10 including a 52-41 victory at TD Arena. The victory sparked a six-game win streak that ended with a 57-56 victory against the Cougars in the SoCon Tournament.
Georgia Southern opened a five-game homestand with a three-game win streak but dropped the final two contests to Samford and SoCon-leader Chattanooga. The losing streak reached four games over the weekend after a pair of one-points were erased in the final seconds at Elon and UNCG.
The Lady Eagles swapped opponents over the weekend with the Cougars. College of Charleston split their weekend in Greensboro with a 52-42 win at UNCG and a 51-46 loss at Elon. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak and was their third of the season.
Georgia Southern returns home Saturday for a Pack the House in Pink doubleheader against Western Carolina at 3 p.m. The men follow at 7:30 p.m. with College of Charleston.
