SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Georgia Southern Women's Soccer struck first in its 2011 Southern Conference opener, but a pair of second half goals took Wofford past the Eagles, 2-1. The Eagles out-shot Wofford 4-2 in the first half, but faced 10 Terrier shots in the second half. The loss drops Georgia Southern to 2-5-1 overall and 0-1 in SoCon play. The Terriers improve to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Sophomore Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute by taking advantage of a misplay by the Wofford goalkeeper to score from five yards out. Her team-high fourth goal of the season ended Wofford's string of 501 minutes without allowing a goal.
The Terriers brought the scores even at 1-1 in the 55th minute off a goal by Chelsea Ashworth. A pass from Anne Phillips into the box allowed the Wofford attacker to score her fourth goal of the season into the top-right corner of the net.
Wofford added a second goal in the 70th minute on a corner kick by Erin Stephenson. She bent the corner into the goal for her first goal of the season and what would prove to be the game winning goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kailey Kiefus (North Tustin, Calif.) made four saves in the match as Wofford took 10 shots in the second half. Georgia Southern took seven shots on the night with two on frame.
The Eagles road swing continues with a Sunday afternoon (Sept. 25th) at Furman. The SoCon contest starts at 2 p.m.
