Volleyball Finishes Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Georgia Southern Volleyball team (3-8) finished the 2011 Carolina Classic winless after dropping a pair of games against two quality opponents. The Eagles faced host North Carolina in the first match and wrapped up the tournament with a loss to #18 San Diego.
The Eagles fell 3-0 to host North Carolina in the first game of the day. The Tar Heels won the three-set match 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 to improve to 5-2. Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) recorded 10 kills but committed five errors for a .179 attack percentage. Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) tallied 34 assists and posted a team best .429 hitting percentage in the first match.
North Carolina hit .406 in the win while committing only eight attack errors. Emily McGee posted 19 kills for a .459 mark while Kayla Berringer recorded 11 kills. Erica Behm powered the offense with 33 assists and added six digs.
The Toreros hit just .193 but won the match 3-1. The Eagles took the second set 25-21 but San Diego won their three sets 25-22, 25-15, 25-18. Rachel Alvey posted 54 digs to set up three double-digit kill performances by Chloe Ferari, Amber Tatsch and Carrie Baird.
Parker Small (Charlotte, N.C.) led GSU with 11 kills. Van Dyke added 4 kills, 32 assists and a team best .429 hitting percentage. Georgia Southern committed fewer attack errors than their opponent, but a San Diego defense powered by C'era Oliveira's 25 digs held the Eagles to a .108 hitting percentage.
The Georgia Southern Volleyball team returns home for the first time since August to play host to the Bash in the Boro., a three-day tournament which starts on Thursday against Presbyterian at 7 p.m.
