Chattanooga Squeezes by Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team (8-7, 2-4 SoCon), won the doubles point, but Chattanooga (9-7, 4-2 SoCon) edged out the Eagles in singles play for a 4-3 win Saturday (April 2nd) at the Hanner Tennis Complex. Senior Ali Beavers, who moved up to play number-one singles, rebounded after a first-set loss to extend her win streak to eight matches.
Strong play by the Eagles on court one and three in doubles play helped GSU gain the first point of the match. Seniors Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) and Ashley Hungerford (Clearwater, Fla.) downed Charlotte Bossy and Diana Zora 8-4 at the No. 3 seed. The number-one duo of Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) preserved a 9-7 victory over Chattanooga's Alexa Flynn and Emily Hangstefer to clinch the doubles point.
Chattanooga charged back in singles play, winning at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 spots, to take a 3-1 lead. Beavers, who replaced Paola Garrido at the No. 1 position, cut the Mocs' lead her win. She battled back from a first-set loss to take the last two sets 6-3, 6-0, from Chattanooga's Jenna Nurik. An Eagle loss on court three clinched the match for the Mocs.
Sophomore Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) finished the Eagles on a high note with a win in three sets over Chattanooga's Diana Zora. After falling in the first set, Beeler won the second-set tiebreaker 7-6 (10-4) and the final set 11-9.
Georgia Southern concludes weekend play Sunday, April 3rd when it welcomes Samford to Hanner Tennis Complex for a 12 p.m. matchup.
