STATESBORO, Ga. - Former Georgia Southern Men's Soccer student-athlete Jon Cox has signed a professional contract with the Atlanta Silverbacks of the North American Soccer League. Cox is the second player go professional under Head Coach Kevin Kennedy in his five-year tenure at Georgia Southern, joining Andreus Cabrerra who signed with the Puerto Rico Islanders in 2007.
"We're very excited for the opportunity Jon has with the Silverbacks," said Kennedy. "Jon has a great frame that translates well to the professional game. He is big, strong and quick, but most importantly he is a good technical player that understands the game. He can be a dangerous player scoring goals and playing the ball into space to link up the attacks. Jon has tremendous potential and we can't wait to see where his career takes him."
Cox, the 2006 SoCon Freshman of the Year and a 2007 College Soccer News Freshman All-American, joins the Silverbacks following an outstanding career for the Eagles. He led the 2010 Eagles in scoring and and posted three career game-winning goals. He assisted on both Georgia Southern goals in the Eagles' 2-1 victory over perennial national power Clemson in 2008. He is a two-time All-Southern Conference honoree and picked up a second-team nod in 2010.
"I'm excited to extend my career, especially in my hometown so my friends and family can see me play on a regular basis," said Cox. "I've worked hard to get here and I'm excited to be able to represent my alma mater as a professional athlete."
The Atlanta Silverbacks open the 2011 season on April 9th against NSC Minnesota Stars. The Silverbacks play their home games at Atlanta Silverbacks Park in northeastern Atlanta. For more information about the Silverbacks, visit www.AtlantaSilverbacks.com.
