Melian Puigventos SoCon Player of the Year

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Juan Melian Puigventos (Las Palmas De Las Canaria, Spain) has been named Southern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year as announced today (April 19th) by the league office. Melian Puigventos was a perfect 10-0 at No. 1 singles in league play, winning eight of his 10 matches in two sets. The sophomore becomes the first player in Georgia Southern's history to receive this prestigious award.
Melian Puigventos was also named to the All-Conference first team for singles, the first Eagle selected since 2001. The Spaniard closed out the regular season with a 15-match winning streak at No. 1 singles and a 21-1 record in singles action. His .955 winning percentage currently ranks as the all-time best for a single season in Georgia Southern history.
This is Melian Puigventos' third honor received from the league office this season. He was also named SoCon Men's Tennis Player of the Month for March and most recently awarded SoCon Men's Tennis Player of the Week for matches played April 11-17th. This is the second consecutive year Juan has received postseason honors. Last year, he was named to the SoCon All-Freshman team.
Georgia Southern returns to action Wednesday, April 20th, in the first round of the 2011 SoCon Championships against Chattanooga at 2 p.m. The 2011 SoCon Championships take place at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
