STATESBORO, Ga - The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team (9-7, 2-2 SoCon) begins a two-week road trip in the Carolinas this weekend against UNC Greensboro (11-4, 4-1 SoCon) and Davidson (4-14, 0-5 SoCon). The Eagles compete against the Spartans in Greensboro, N.C., Saturday, April 2nd, at 11 a.m. before traveling to Davidson, N.C., on Sunday, April 3rd, to face the Wildcats at 1 p.m.
"Every match in the SoCon this year has been a dogfight, where the outcome could shift on just a couple of points, this weekend will be no different," said Head Coach Nick Zieziula. "We have to be ready mentally and physically to be sharp from the first ball to the last. We have to be present for every single ball, just like gravity."
Georgia Southern trails UNC Greensboro 7-9 all-time in the series. In the last meeting, the Spartans won the final match at the number-one seed to pull out the victory 4-3. The Eagles lead Davidson in the all-time series, 12-9. The Wildcats defeated GSU 4-3 last season.
Sophomore Juan Melian Puigventos (Las Palmas De Las Canaria, Spain) and Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands) lead Georgia Southern in singles play. At No.1, Melian Puigventos is 15-2 on the season with a nine-match winning streak. Verdam is 7-1 at the number-two seed. The duo is 9-4 on court one in doubles play.
Appalachian State snapped UNCG's seven-match winning streak, 6-1, last time on Friday, March 25th. Davidson has lost four-straight matches as it heads into Saturday's contest against Appalachian State. Joe Schafer's nine wins at No. 1 singles lead the Wildcats.
