Melian Puigventos Named SoCon Men's Tennis Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Juan Melian Puigventos (Las Palmas De Las Canaria, Spain) has been named Southern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week as announced today (April 18th) by the league office. Melian Puigventos was a perfect 2-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles action for matches played April 11-17.
The sophomore concluded the regular season with a 15-match winning streak at No. 1 singles as he secured a three-set victory over Chattanooga's Roberto Vieira, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 and downed College of Charleston's Lukas Koncilia, 6-0, 6-3, Thursday (April 14). The win over Vieira helped the Eagles clinch the match over the Mocs, 4-3, and was just the third time this season Melian Puigventos has been pushed to a third set. He is now 21-1 at No. 1 singles, currently the all-time best single-season winning-percentage in Georgia Southern singles play.
Melian Puigventos, paired with Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands), split their doubles matches on court one. The duo dropped its match to Charleston, 8-7 (8-6), before defeating Chattanooga 9-8 (7-3).
Georgia Southern returns to action Wednesday, April 20th, in the first round of the 2011 SoCon Championships against Chattanooga at 2 p.m. The 2011 SoCon Championships take place at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
