Two SoCon Matches Ahead for Men?s Tennis

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis (8-6, 1-1 SoCon) team continues Southern Conference play this weekend as it travels to The Citadel (1-15, 0-5 SoCon) Friday, March 25th, before playing host to Samford (11-4, 1-2 SoCon) Sunday, March 27th, at home. The Eagles go on the road for the first time since February 27th to face The Citadel at 2:30 p.m. at the Earle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C., on Friday. Georgia Southern returns to the Hanner Tennis Complex two days later to play host to Samford on Sunday at noon.
Georgia Southern holds a 19-6 record all-time against The Citadel and is 6-3-1 all-time against Samford. The Eagles split contests against the two programs last season. GSU was on the short end of a 3-4 loss to The Citadel, but picked up a 4-3 victory over Samford to close out the 2010 regular season.
The Eagles are led by sophomores Juan Melian Puigventos (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) and Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands). At No.1 singles, Puigventos is 13-1 with a seven-match win streak. Verdam is 10-4 overall this season and 5-1 in matches at the number-two seed. The duo are 7-4 in doubles play at the number-one spot.
The Citadel dropped its most recent match, 2-5, against Chicago on Wednesday (March 23rd). The Bulldogs are winless in five SoCon matches this season. David Orces is 11-5 at the top of the Bulldogs lineup for singles play, winning five of his last six outings.
Elon snapped Samford's four-match winning streak 5-2 Tuesday (March 22nd). The Bulldogs are led by No. 3 Carl Abalos and No. 4 Oliver Reynolds in singles play. Both Abalos and Reynolds won their respective matches against the Phoenix to extend their individual winning streaks to five-consecutive matches and overall records on the season to 11-3. The duo also share an 11-3 record as the No.1 doubles pair. Samford takes on Davidson Saturday (March 26th) before heading to Statesboro.
