Women's Tennis Plays Three Matches in Next Four Days

STATESBORO, Ga. - Winning three of its last four matches, the Eagle Women's Tennis Team (6-5) starts the weekend at Hilton Head Island, S.C. Georgia Southern and Southern Illinois Carbondale (6-7) play a Friday match at the Evian Tennis Center inside Shipyard Plantation as part of the 2011 Spring Break Tennis Fest. The match begins at 12 p.m.
South Carolina State dropped Southern Illinois Carbondale 7-0 on Wednesday to hand the Salukis their third-straight loss of the season. The Salukis, still transitioning to the outdoor game, have lost four of their last five matches. Freshman Anita Lee is 4-4 on the season at the number-two singles spot, picking up a three-set win at Charleston Southern while classmate Korey Love won in straight sets in the No. 4 match against the Buccaneers.
Eagle seniors Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Ashley Hungerford (Clearwater, Fla.) both own four-match win streaks with Beavers posting a team-best 8-2 record while playing at number-two singles. With wins in five of her last six matches, junior Alessandra Dzuba (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) stands at 6-2 on the season at the number-six singles spot.
Georgia Southern returns to Statesboro on Saturday for the first of six home matches. The Eagles meet Florida A&M at 2:30 p.m. at the Hanner Tennis Complex for their final non-conference match of 2011 before welcoming Elon on Monday, March 21st, at 2 p.m.
The last meeting between the Lady Rattlers and Eagles took place in 2007 with the Eagles taking a 6-1 victory in Statesboro for the fourth-straight win in the series. The Eagles currently lead the series 6-4. Florida A&M won two matches last weekend with wins over South Dakota State 5-2 and Marist College 7-0.
Saturday's match against FAMU is a USTA Campus Kids' Day event and has also been designated Junior Eagle Day. Georgia Southern mascot GUS will be in attendance for both the Men's and Women's Tennis contests at Hanner Tennis Complex and Subway is providing sandwiches to the first 50 fans at each match.
