STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Men's Tennis (6-5) returns from a four-day break from competition to play host to Southern Illinois Carbondale (5-1) Monday, March 14th, at 1 p.m. at the Hanner Tennis Complex. This is the first meeting between the two men's tennis programs.
The Eagles continue their six-match homestand and look for a third-straight win after victories last week over Southern Conference foe Furman and Florida Gulf Coast. Both No. 1 Juan Melian Puigventos (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) and No. 2 singles player Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands) have won four-straight matches. Melian Puigventos recorded his 10th win of the year and has an overall mark of 10-1, while Verdam owns an 8-3 overall mark, including a 3-0 record in the number-two slot. Verdam clinched both team wins last week.
The Salukis bring a four-match win streak to Statesboro with their only loss of the season coming at Austin Peay. SIU Carbondale's top two singles players are undefeated so far in 2011. Freshman Adam Fabik is 6-0 at the number-one seed while teammate Orhan Spahic owns a 5-0 mark at the number-two spot. The doubles pair of Falk De Beenhouwer and Spahic extended their dual-match winning streak to 5-0 in doubles play.
