Four-Run Sixth Inning Takes Mountaineers Over Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Softball team looked to be in control of Sunday's season finale at Eagle Field, but a four-run sixth inning gave the Mountaineers a 5-2 win. The Eagles (10-15, 2-1 SoCon) took advantage of three Appalachian State (7-13, 1-2 SoCon) errors to plate a pair of runs in the game. The Mountaineers took the 5-2 lead with a three-run home run to close out the four-run sixth. The loss ends a five-game Georgia Southern home winning streak against Appalachian State.
Appalachian State struck first with a double down the left field line by Allie Cashion to plate Megan Rembielak in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Georgia Southern's starting pitcher Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) retired the next seven ASU batters including three strikeouts.
Georgia Southern leveled the score in the third inning off a throwing error by the Appalachian State first baseman. Senior Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) grounded out to shortstop as junior Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) bolted for third base on the throw. The Mountaineer first baseman's throw across the diamond went wide and allowed Fogle to scamper home and tie the score at 1-1.
In the fifth frame, GSU took the lead when the throw from an apparent ground out to third base sailed over the ASU first baseman's head. The error allowed junior Jorie Walker (Dublin, Ga.) to score from first and the batter, Fogle, to reach third base.
Appalachian State's big inning kicked off when Cashion grounded to Walker, the GSU shortstop. Walker threw home but could not beat ASU's Katie Boyd to the plate, as she scored the tying run. With two runners on, ASU's Hannah Dow hit a home run to left center to put the Mountaineers up 5-2.
The Eagle bats cooled in the final two innings and GSU went hitless down the stretch. Georgia Southern registered four hits in the loss, three singles and a double from Hanna Ennis (Springfield, Ga.).
Georgia Southern will travel to Atlanta for a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader against Georgia Tech. The twinbill starts at 3 p.m. from Mewborn Park on the campus of Georgia Tech.
