Women's Tennis Wins Season Opener at USC Upstate 6-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team (1-0) won its season opener at USC Upstate with a 6-1 win over the Spartans at the USC State Tennis Complex on Sunday, February 6th. The Eagles were rained out of their match against South Carolina State yesterday.
"It was great to start the year off with a victory and I was proud of my seniors for providing their leadership and contributing to the win," said Eagles Head Coach Amy Bonner.
The 2011 season begins the final spring for three Eagle seniors: Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) Ashley Hungerford (Clearwater, Fla.) and Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) as they make their mark on the program.
The Eagles swept through the doubles, as the number-one doubles team of freshman Paula Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Beavers defeated Talia Rojas and Ana Sofia Camberos, 8-1. The senior tandem of Hungerford and Rolle captured the win at number-two singles with an 8-4 score over Karen Martinez and Catherine Estupinan. Georgia Southern's number-three doubles pair of Beeler and Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) won by default.
Garrido, Beavers and Hungerford all won in straight sets to secure the win. Garrido downed Martinez 6-1, 6-2 at number-one singles with Beavers dropping Rojas 6-4, 6-1 for the win at the two seed. Hungerford won the first singles point for the Eagles at the number-four seed with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Estupinan.
Georgia Southern plays next at home Sunday, February 13th, for a 10 a.m. match against Hampton at the Hanner Tennis Complex.
