STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team (3-4) returns home to the Hanner Tennis Complex Sunday after its final road trip to face Mercer (3-3) at noon Saturday, February 26th. The Eagles play host to Florida A&M Sunday, February 27th, at 12 p.m. at the Hanner Tennis Complex to begin a six-match homestand. The Eagles last played at home when they took a win over Hampton on February 13th.
Mercer's Peddy Tennis Center provides the venue for the Eagles-Bears match Saturday. Playing a similar schedule to the Eagles, with similar results, the Bears are even on the year with wins over Georgia Southwestern, Young Harris and Jacksonville State and losses to Georgia State, Coastal Carolina and Florida A&M. Mercer's No. 1 singles competitor Pierre Tafelski, with a 5-1 record, will face Georgia Southern's Juan Melian Puigventos (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain), who had his six-match win streak snapped last weekend.
'We've got a tough match against Mercer on Saturday," said Head Coach Nick Zieziula. "They are 3-3 on the season, but they were right there with some tough programs in their three losses. We've had a good week of preparation and we are ready to get after them Saturday."
The top two doubles pairings for the Eagles look to extend their win streaks as the number-two doubles team of Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) and Marco Osorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) has won four straight. Melian Puigventos and Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands), at the No. 1 seed, have won their last two outings.
Florida A&M is a historically strong program and the Rattler men's tennis team won the 2009 HBCU national championship. With a 5-3 mark this year, the Rattlers are led by Levan Clark at No. 1 singles and the No. 2 doubles pair of Takura Happy and Childi Gabriel.
