Georgia Southern Closes in on Third Place at CCSAs

ATHENS, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving team narrowed the margin between fourth and third place Friday night as the Eagles pulled to within 5.5 points of third-place Gardner-Webb. GSU scored 204 points in seven events on the second day of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The Eagles trail Florida Gulf Coast (586.5), Davidson (398) and Gardner-Webb (314.5).
Georgia Southern saw its biggest point surplus in the 200 Free when five Eagles placed within the top 16 to give GSU 41 of its 204-point total on Friday night. Senior Ali Campbell (Ft. McMurray, Alberta, Canada) led the way, earning 14 points for her fifth-place finish (1:52.27). Bevillard followed Campbell in sixth place (1:52.40) while Devan White (Kennesaw, Ga.) rounded out the top 10 (1:54.04). Senior Laurie Stephens (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Emily Fell (Brunswick, Ga.) placed 12th (1:54.56) and 15th (1:55.35), respectively.
"It's a collective effort," said Head Coach Nathan Kellogg about the Eagles' effort today. "It's not one person doing it, but everyone who is touching the water. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going into tomorrow."
Two third-place finishes by Lindsay Goodman (Knoxville, Tenn.) and a third-place finish by Courtney Harrison (Greenville, S.C.) also helped the Eagles close the gap. Both earned CCSA All-Conference honors with their top-three finishes. With three all-conference awards between the two swimmers, GSU matched the number of events and Eagles who achieved All-Conference honors a year ago.
"It's something about being in the moment, it's racing fast and trying to hit the walls before the next person does," stated Kellogg on Goodman's and Harrison's performances. "We try to practice like that on a consistent basis, and I think it's paying off. We certainly knew they could do that, so it was nice to see them execute."
Goodman continued her success in the pool Friday night after setting two University records the day before. She swam to third-place finishes in the 400 IM (4:26.66) and 100 back (56.47) and became the first member of the team to win all-conference accolades this season. Harrison joined Goodman on the CCSA All-Conference team three events later when the freshman tapped the wall for a third-place time of 1:04.52 in the 100 Breast. Harrison also finished ninth in the 400 IM.
In the 200 Medley Relay, the Georgia Southern "A" team, consisting of Goodman, Megan Ostrom (St. Louis Park, Minn.), Kristen Haudenschild (Woodbridge, Va.) and Caroline Bevillard (Bishop, Ga.) placed fourth with a time of 1:46.34. The Eagles concluded their night in the 800 free relay with another top-five finish. The 800 free relay team consisting of Campbell, Stephens, Fell and White combined for a 7:36.86 time for fourth place.
Other top-10 performances included Megan Ostrom's (St. Louis Park, Minn) seventh-place finish in the 100 breast (1:06.52) and Lindsay Mullican's (Lancaster, Pa.) sixth-place finish in the 400 IM. Bevillard improved one spot to fifth place in the 100 back (56.96) and Meg Beasley (Knoxville, Tenn.) jumped three spots to 10th place (58.95). Harrison's time of 4:29.05 was good for 11th place in the 400 IM.
The CCSA Championships conclude Saturday, February 19th, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m. The events contested on final day include the 400 Free Relay, 1650 Free, 100 Free, 200 Backstroke, 200 Breast, 200 Butterfly and women's 3-meter Diving.
