Women's Basketball Travels to North Carolina for Two Games

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Basketball team (11-15, 8-9) travels to North Carolina for two games this weekend. The Lady Eagles will face Davidson (11-15, 6-11) on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Appalachian State (21-4, 15-2) Monday at 7 p.m.
The Lady Eagles are coming off a 51-39 loss to College of Charleston on Wednesday, February 16th. Charleston took the season series against GSU after holding the Lady Eagles under 40 points in both games. The Cougars snapped the Lady Eagles' 10-game home winning streak after forcing 21 turnovers. Charleston's Alyssa Frye scored 15 points to lead all scorers in the game. Tonia Gerty added 12 points, five assists and seven steals to her resume.
Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fla.) drained a pair of threes to break the Georgia Southern single-season record for three pointers in a season. Navarro quickly tied the school record on the first basket of the game and broke it on her second trey of the game at the 15:48 mark of the first half. After the game the Eagles single-season total for three-pointers stands at 172. The previous record was 165 set in the 2006-07 season.
Junior Samantha Williams (Kingsport, Tenn.) has stepped up as of late and scored in double-figures in five-straight games. She had previously only scored 10 or more points in four total games this year before the streak started at Samford on January 31st. Williams tied for the team lead with 12 points and dished out four assists while pulling down six boards. Navarro tied with Williams on 12 points and had three assists in 38 minutes of work.
Georgia Southern defeated Davidson 55-42 in the season's earlier meeting on January 10th to even the all-time series at 19-19. MiMi DuBose (Jefferson, Ga.) drained four of the Lady Eagles' 11 three pointers in the victory. GSU shot 57.9% from behind the arc and connected on 11 of 19 shots from downtown, while the Wildcats made only three treys in 13 attempts. Georgia Southern forced 20 turnovers but scored only four points off of Davidson's miscues.
DuBose led the Lady Eagles with 12 points. Navarro scored 11 and Meredyth Frye (Fredericksburg, Va.) added 10 more. Williams drained three field goals and finished with eight points off the bench, scoring nearly all of Georgia Southern's 14 bench points.
Davidson is led by 6-4 sophomore center, Sophia Aleksandravicius. The Pound Ridge, N.Y. native leads the team in points per game with 17.2, rebounds per game with 8.7 and blocks per game with 3.2. She ranks second in the conference in both points and rebounding and is first in blocks. Laura Murray is the only other Wildcat to average in double figures and is scoring 11.6 points per game.
Georgia Southern picked up the win in the season's first meeting with Appalachian State on January 10th, 73-65. The Lady Eagles lead 32-13 in the all-time series with the Mountaineers, but ASU is the conference leader with a 15-2 SoCon record. Appalachian State has lost only four games all season and is 21-4 on the year. Its only other conference loss on the year came at Furman 63-62.
DuBose posted a career-high of 25 points to help propel Georgia Southern to the victory over the Mountaineers at Hanner Fieldhouse back in January. The Lady Eagles also got double-figures scoring from Krista Tate (Atlanta, Ga.) and Briana Scott (Dumfries, Va.). Tate made six of her seven free throw attempts and scored 16 points while pulling down seven rebounds. Scott added 10 points on 5-10 shooting from the floor.
Sam Ramirez leads the Mountaineers with 16.4 points per game and has connected on 62 three-pointers this season. Ashlen Dewart is also scoring 16.4 points per game and is second on the squad with 6.4 rebounds per contest. Anna Freeman, one of two players to start every game, is the team's top rebounder with 6.5 boards per game. Freeman is also scoring in double figures with 14.3 per contest.
