Two University Records Fall as Georgia Southern in Fourth at CCSAs

ATHENS, Ga. - Two University records fell as the Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving team completed day one of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships in fourth place with a score of 115. The Eagles tallied points in all six events held today, February 17th, at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The three-day conference meet continues through Saturday.
Georgia Southern's point total puts the Eagles behind Florida Gulf Coast (256.5), Davidson (178) and Gardner-Webb (142.5). Coach Nathan Kellogg is pleased with the team's position going into the rest of the weekend.
"We are in a good place after day one and our team is performing really well," Kellogg said. "Our team is showing confidence, which is displayed in the times we are swimming. We still have two more days of competition, but I like the mindset and place our program is in after the first day."
Senior Lindsay Goodman (Knoxville, Tenn.) helped put the team in a great position, as part of two University records in the 400 Medley Relay event. Goodman swam the first leg of the race with Megan Ostrom (St. Louis Park, Minn.), Rachael Stockwell (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Caroline Bevillard (Bishop, Ga.) combining for a 3:51.46 for fourth-place in the finals. Thursday's time took nearly two seconds off the previous record.
Goodman's 56.05 split in the relay also broke her own individual backstroke record. Her previous 100 back time was 56.96 at the 2009 CCSAs.
Bevillard also took part in the 200 free relay race with teammates Devan White (Kennesaw, Ga.), Ali Campbell (Ft. McMurray, Alberta, Canada) and Katie Crider (Bloomington, Ind.). The four finished the first event of the evening in seventh place (1:37.98). Bevillard also competed in the 200 IM, bettering her time and place from the preliminaries Thursday morning to the finals, moving to a seventh-place finish with a time of 2:06.17. Ostrom followed, tapping the wall for an 11th-place showing (2:08.95).
Campbell and White finished in the top 16 in separate events to add to the Eagle point total. Campbell placed eight in the 500 free (5:01.54) while White bettered her position from the morning trials, finishing 13th in the 50 free (24.23).
In diving competition, three Eagles placed in the top 16 on the 1-meter boards. Freshman Sara Meisenhelder (Carmel, Ind.) led the way with a seventh-place finish (215.15). Sophomore Alden Lynch (Jacksonville, Fla.) and freshman Amanda Macchio (Redding, Conn.) finished 13th (180.35) and 15th (149.80), respectively.
The CCSA Championships continue Friday, February 18th, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m. The events contested on day two include the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and 800-yard freestyle relay. The final two days of the Championship will be video-streamed live with play-by-play provided by Mark Bryant of the Big South Conference office. A single-day pass is $4.95.
