Lady Eagles Snap Program Record for Threes but Fall to Charleston

STATESBORO, Ga. - Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fla.) drained a pair of threes to break the Georgia Southern Women's Basketball (11-15, 8-9) single-season record for three pointers in a season, but College of Charleston (9-18, 6-12) picked up the season series with a 51-39 decision Wednesday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.
Navarro quickly tied the school record for three pointers in a season on the first basket of the game and broke it on her second trey of the game at the 15:48 mark of the first half. After tonight's game the Eagles single season total for three pointers stands at 172. The previous record was 165 set back in the 2006-07 season.
Junior Samantha Williams (Kingsport, Tenn.) has stepped up as of late and scored in double-figures for the fifth-straight game. She had previously only scored 10 or more points in four total games this year before the streak started at Samford on January 31st. Williams tied for the team lead with 12 points and dished out four assists while pulling down six boards. Navarro tied with Williams with 12 points and had three assists in 38 minutes of work.
Georgia Southern outrebounded Charleston 41-33 and were led by Meredyth Frye's (Fredericksburg, Va.) nine boards. Danielle Spencer (Atlanta, Ga.) tallied eight more rebounds with four coming off the offensive glass.
The Cougars snapped the Lady Eagles 10-game home winning streak after forcing 21 turnovers. Charleston's Alyssa Frye scored 15 points to lead all scorers in the game. Tonia Gerty added 12 points, five assists and seven steals to her resume.
Georgia Southern opened the game with a 10-6 lead. Frye gave the Lady Eagles their biggest lead of the first half on a fastbreak layup. Charleston responded with a 14-0 run over nearly six minutes to take a 20-10 lead at the 8:39 mark. GSU cut into the lead, pulling within five points on back-to-back baskets from Navarro and Williams. Spencer capped a 10-1 run with a jumper at the two-minute mark that pulled the Lady Eagles back to within one point, 21-20. Charleston led 23-20 at halftime after Latisha Harris drained a layup in the paint with 1:47 remaining.
Navarro led Georgia Southern at halftime with nine points, while Williams scored five points and dished out three assists. Alyssa Frye led the Cougars with six points in just nine minutes of action.
Georgia Southern quickly pulled within one point twice in the second half, but was unable to grab the lead back in the second half. Briana Scott (Dumfries, Va.) drained a jumper two minutes into the period to cut the lead to 26-25. Williams hit her second three of the half cutting Charleston lead to 31-30 with 15:26 to play.
The Cougars quickly ran the game back to a nine-point advantage, 39-30, with 12:05 to play and did not allow the Lady Eagles to pull back within a basket the rest of the way. Navarro hit a trey with 10:05 remaining to cut the lead to four points, 39-35, but Charleston pulled back ahead and extended the contest to double figures in the final four minutes.
Georgia Southern returns to the road for a pair of games in the state of North Carolina. The Lady Eagles will face Davidson Saturday at 2 p.m. and Appalachian State Monday at 7 p.m.
