STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Basketball team (11-14, 8-8) returns to Hanner Fieldhouse in search of its 10th-straight home victory Wednesday when it plays host to the College of Charleston (8-18, 5-12) at 7 p.m. The Lady Eagles are 10-1 at home this season and are undefeated in conference play with an 8-0 mark at Hanner.
The last time these two squads met it was a low-scoring affair with Charleston pulling out the one-point win, 40-39. Krista Tate (Atlanta, Ga.) pulled down 12 boards and dropped in seven points while Meredyth Frye (Fredericksburg, Ga.) tied for the game high with 12 points. Janae Smith also scored 12 points for the Cougars and grabbed eight of the team's 41 boards.
Georgia Southern is coming off a 51-45 loss to Western Carolina on Valentine's Day. The Lady Eagles held a nine-point lead in the first half but were unable to hold on. Samantha Williams (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Logan Youngblood (Sylvester, Ga.) tallied 10 points each in the game, while Aishya Wofford (Augusta, Ga.) scored seven points and pulled down seven boards. Youngblood scored just one point shy of her career high of 11 points set back against Chattanooga.
Georgia Southern drained four treys in the game and finished just one shy of tying the school record for three pointers in a season. The Lady Eagles have scored 164 threes this season and need two more to break the record of 165 set back in 2006-07.
Frye leads the team with 291 points and is tied with Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fla.) with an 11.6 points-per-game average. Frye leads the squad in SoCon games with 12.9 points per contest. Williams has been hot of late, averaging 11.8 points per game in the last five contests and has scored in double figures in the last four games. Wofford leads the team on the boards in the last five games with 5.6 a game.
Charleston comes to Statesboro after having won two of its last three games. The Cougars are seeking their 600th program win after recently picking up victories over Wofford and Davidson. Tonia Gerty scored in double figures for the 61st game of her career in the win over the Terriers. Gerty also has posted a Charleston career-record of 447 assists. Janae Smith leads the Cougars with 12.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, while Gerty is second on the squad with 10.6 points per game.
