STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team (1-0) will play host to Hampton Sunday, February 13th, at 10 a.m. at the Hanner Tennis Complex. The Eagles' home match tomorrow is the only time for fans to catch them this month as they will play three Atlanta-area teams next weekend before beginning conference play on the road.
The Women's Tennis Head Coach Amy Bonner and the Eagles are 3-0 in the series with Hampton, winning the matches in each of the past three seasons. Georgia Southern recorded a 7-0 win last year at the Hanner tennis courts as GSU swept the doubles for the first point. Alexandra Langmo (Boca Raton, Fla.) and classmate Allison Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) got the Eagles rolling with straight-set wins at number-five and number-four singles, respectively.
Senior Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) has two wins over the Pirates at number-one singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win last season and a 7-5, 6-4 victory in 2008. She won at number-three singles in the 2009 meeting between the two schools. Rolle also contributed to two doubles wins in each of the last two seasons. Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) posted two wins over her Hampton competition, both at number-two singles, and was part of the winning number-one doubles team in 2009. Beeler won in straight sets at the number-four spot in last February's meeting.
After a rainout at South Carolina State, Georgia Southern opened the 2011 spring season last Sunday with a 6-1 win over USC Upstate. The Eagles' doubles teams swept for the first point and Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain), Beavers and Ashley Hungerford (Clearwater, Fla.) all won in straight sets to secure the win.
Following this single match at home, Georgia Southern will play its next five matches on the road before a return to Hanner Tennis Complex March 9th and 10th for non-conference play against Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson, respectively.
