Undefeated Stetson Tops Eagles in Men's Tennis

DELAND, Fla. - The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team (2-2) fell to undefeated Stetson (6-0) 5-2 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center Saturday, February 12th. Sophomore Juan Melian Puigventos (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) battled against the Hatters' Maksin Lenanovich at number-one singles, winning 6-1, 6-4 to protect his 4-0 record in singles play.
Sophomore Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands) experienced a long-awaited victory over Stetson's Hans Adrian Riseng in a rematch from last fall's Southern Intercollegiate Championships. Verdam won in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 at the number-three seed.
"We battled hard today, put forth a solid team effort and came away with our heads up," said Eagles Head Coach Nick Zieziula. "We know that we could have executed a little better at a few critical points in our matches, and that was the difference. Today, Stetson was the better team, but we learned a lot from this match that we can build on to prepare for the SoCon. Matthijs scored a dominating win over an opponent he lost to last fall. It was great to see his hard work pay off."
The Eagles return home to the Hanner Tennis Complex to face Hampton Sunday at 2 p.m. The match will follow the Eagles-Pirates women's match, which begins at 10 a.m.
