2011 Softball Campaign Starts This Weekend

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Softball opens the 2011 campaign on Saturday in the Spring Hill Suites 2011 Eagle Classic against Mercer and Radford in a three-team tournament. The Eagles play host to Mercer at 1:30 p.m. and Radford at 4 p.m. The Eagles will also play Radford Sunday at 10 a.m. with the Mercer game set for 3 p.m. Eagle Field will also play host to two neutral site games between Radford and Mercer with an 11 a.m. start Saturday and 12:30 p.m. scheduled time Sunday.
“Our Eagles have been anxious to play and working hard for months,” said Head Coach Maggie Johnson. “This weekend is a chance for us to compete against two strong programs in Radford and Mercer. We expect a lot of focus and all-out effort as we bring Eagle Softball to the diamond for the first time in 2011.”
The 2011 Eagles are led by SoCon Preseason Player of the Year Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) and SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.). Smith hit .322 last year with 18 home runs, ranking second all-time in the SoCon and 24th nationally. The two-time defending SoCon Pitcher of the Year, Streetmon posted a league-best 19 wins a year ago with 169 strikeouts and a 1.97 ERA.
The Eagles were picked third in the preseason SoCon coaches poll after finishing the 2010 regular season in third place and ousting regular season champion Chattanooga from the SoCon Tournament a year ago.
Free video of Georgia Southern's games this weekend will be available on EagleVision starting at 1:30 on Saturday against Mercer. The radio broadcast of Eagles' games will be available on 91.9 The Buzz locally in Stateboro with Drew Cheshire and Justin Baker calling all the action. GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com will also have live stats of all the games in the 2011 Spring Hill Suites Eagle Classic. Admission to Eagle Field is free.
