Frye's Double-Double Not Enough in Loss to Stetson

STATESBORO, Ga. - MiMi DuBose (Jefferson, Ga.) and Meredyth Frye (Fredricksburg, Va.) both scored in double figures, but it was not enough as the Georgia Southern Lady Eagles fell to the Stetson Hatters 61-51 at Hanner Fieldhouse on Tuesday night. The duo combined for the majority of the team's points and reached the double-digit threshold in the same game for just the second time this season.
Stetson (7-3), however, pulled a page from Furman's playbook and went to the free throw line 22 times and scored a decisive 17 points from the charity stripe. The reigning A-Sun Player of the Week, Victoria McGowan, benefited from her trips to the line, scoring a game-high 19 points on six-for-six shooting at the stripe.
Speaking about stopping teams from getting to the rim Head Coach Rusty cram said, "The last two games have been against very athletic teams. We had a team concept, but we just broke down and didn't follow the game plan consistently tonight."
DuBose led Georgia Southern (2-7) with 16 points on five-of-13 shooting from the floor. SoCon All-Preseason team pick, Frye, recorded her first double-double of the season and just the second of her career with 14 points and 10 boards.
The Lady Eagles dug themselves into a hole with early first half turnovers and were unable to hold onto a halftime lead. Stetson scored 14 points off of the 17 turnovers and shot 41.2% from the field to earn their sixth win in their last eight contests.
"We just turned it over the first four or six trips down the line. It fed them, and they got great easy looks at the basket," said Cram. "We turned the ball over way too much in the first half. When we quit turning the ball over and started playing more aggressively then we made some runs."
Powered by seven points from DuBose, Georgia Southern embarked on a 14-4 run over the final 7:16 minutes of the first half to take a 25-23 lead into the locker room. Their first lead of the game, came after Stetson took its second-largest advantage, eight points, on two free throws by Jazmin Garcia.
The second half opened with both teams exchanging baskets and neither could take much of an advantage until Stetson erased a Lady Eagle lead with an 13-2 run. During the nearly six minute period, Sanders went to the charity stripe four times and tallied eight points. Georgia Southern cut into a 10-point lead, 55-45, with a 6-0 run. Trailing by four points with just over a minute remaining, Stetson closed out the game with a 6-0 run of their own.
Georgia Southern is off next week for finals and will return to Southern Conference play at Davidson on December 19th.
