STATESBORO, Ga. - Returning from a nine-day Holiday break, the Georgia Southern Women's Basketball team continues a five-game homestand with their final contest of 2011 against the Southern Wesleyan Warriors. Tip-off for the December 30th contest is set for 7 p.m. at Hanner Fieldhouse.
Georgia Southern (3-8) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 52-46 win over Jacksonville on December 21st and seeks its first back-to-back victories of the season. The Lady Eagles' previous two wins were followed by a losing streak of two and four games; but with four-straight games at home, GSU has an opportunity to snap that trend.
Samantha Williams (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Meredyth Frye (Fredricksburg, Va.) both scored in double figures in the win over the Dolphins. Williams, who made her first start since the season opener, tied her career-high with 18 points on eight-for-11 shooting from the field. Frye added 14 points, while Ro-Ro Smith (Blackshear, Ga.) almost doubled her season total with eight points and tied for a team-best six rebounds.
Southern Wesleyan (4-7), a NAIA school from Central, S.C., in the Southern States Athletics Conference, is a strong three-point shooting squad that ranks 29th in treys per game and 39th in three-pointers made among NAIA Division I schools. The Warriors are also strong on the defensive end and average over 10 steals a contest.
Led by Shandrice Erby's 14 points per game, four players average double figures for Southern Wesleyan. Erby also leads the squad with 27 made threes and a 37.5% three-point shooting percentage. Whitley Smith is second on the team with 22 treys and is fourth on the squad with 11.8 points per game.
