STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Lady Eagles will have a tall task when they return to conference play from a week-long break for finals at Davidson. The Lady Eagles will go against the Southern Conference Preseason Player of the Year and the reigning conference Player of the Month, Sophie Aleksandravicius, on Monday at 7 p.m.
Aleksandravicius leads the Wildcats in points with 15.4 a game and rebounds with 8.6 a contest. The junior forward scored 20 points in her last outing at Western Carolina, her third 20-point game of the season. She became the third Davidson player to grab Player of the Month honors since the league started handing them out in the 2004-05 season.
Georgia Southern (2-7, 0-2) has lost three-straight games but is hoping that the break for finals will allow them to regroup after a 61-51 loss against Stetson on December 8th. Junior guard, Meredyth Frye (Fredricksburg, Va.), is one of two players to have started all nine games and one of three to have scored in all nine contests. She also leads the team with 10.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Davidson (4-4, 1-0), winners of their last two games, takes on the College of Charleston on Sunday before playing the Lady Eagles the next day. The Wildcats are coming off of a 64-46 victory at Western Carolina in their conference opener. The team's assist leader with 34, Barbara Sitton, scored a career-high 14 points in the win over the Catamounts.
The all-time series between the two teams is a close one. Davidson leads 20-19 after a series sweep back in 2008-09. The two teams have split the two annual meetings the last two years. A year ago it was the home team that had the advantage, but in 2009-10 the road team emerged victorious.
The Lady Eagles return home for five-straight games beginning with Jacksonville on December 21st. Georgia Southern returns after the holiday break on December 30th against Southern Wesleyan. Tickets for any of GSU's home games can be purchased online at GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com.
