STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving (3-2, 2-0 CCSA) returns to competition Thursday, November 17, as it travels to Radford, Va., for the Highlander Invitational. This is the Eagles first competition since last month's double-dual meet in Charleston, S.C. and their first multi-day meet of the season.
Last season, Georgia Southern scored 906 points during the three-day event to win the tournament title. The Eagles led the eight-team field from start to finish and garnered eight first-place finishes. Georgia Southern had various Eagles place 18 times on the final day to help secure the victory.
"We expect the Highlander Invitational to be a very competitive, challenging, and fun meet," said Head Coach Nate Kellogg. "Our goal is for our women to be the very best they can be that day, to race hard and dive well."
Georgia Southern will compete against nine other schools at this year's event, including five teams from the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA). Taking to the water will be CCSA foes Radford, North Florida, Campbell, Liberty, and North Carolina A&T along with St. Francis (Pa.), Youngstown State, Mount St. Mary's and Millersville.
"Other than the CCSA Championships, this will be the only championship format meet with preliminaries and finals that we have this season," said Kellogg. "That will certainly make it an energetic and exciting meet, and we are anxious to see how we perform in that environment. Because of the three-day prelim and finals format, we will count on our depth and expect everyone to contribute."
Georgia Southern returns to the pool after competing in two meets in less than 24 hours on October 28-29. The Eagles defeated CCSA opponent Campbell (163-74) in their first home meet of the season Friday night, Oct. 28, before splitting a double dual meet at the College of Charleston on Saturday. The Eagles defeated the Cougars (162-138), but fell to East Carolina (193-99). Freshman Elaina Lanson (Wadsworth, Ohio) was named the CCSA Swimmer of the Week after earning three first place finishes and a third place finish, which included a new pool record in the 50 Free (23.7) at the Recreation Activity Center (RAC).
