BY THE NUMBERS - SWIMMING & DIVING
STATESBORO, Ga. - "By the Numbers" will spotlight a Georgia Southern Athletics team each week with statistics, rankings and other interesting items of note during our Eagles' seasons. The Swimming and Diving team is the featured squad this week.
1: One Georgia Southern swimmer hails from across the pond, Abigail Lavallin, calling Somerset, England, home.
2.1-2.6: The range of degree of difficulty for dives from the one-meter board with a range of 2.1-2.8 for a degree of difficulty on the three-meter board. Each dive is judged on four elements: starting position and approach, take-off, technique and grace of the drive during the passage through the air, and entry into the water.
3: Three seniors, Katie Crider, Alex Mitchell and Rachael Stockwell, will serve as captains for the Eagles this season.
3.32: A 3.32 team grade point average was posted by the Swimming and Diving in Spring 2011 to earn Academic All-America honors from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) and rank Georgia Southern ahead of Duke, UCLA and Texas. The Eagles have earned Academic All-America honors every semester since the CSCAA academic program has been in place.
4: The Eagles placed fourth at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships with five swimmers and divers earning all-Conference honors.
10: Avidasports Performance Rankings ranked Georgia Southern 10th among all Division I women's swimming and diving programs in 2010-11.
14: Thirteen freshmen and one sophomore transfer comprise the 14 additions to this year's squad.
14: In addition to 14 newcomers, 14 letterwinners return for 2011-2012. The returnees own 43 of the top-five individual times recorded last season.
17: Swimming and Diving placed 17 student-athletes on the conference Academic Honor Roll for the 2010-2011 year.
17: Seventeen meets are on the schedule for the 2011-2012 season, including a home dual meet on Friday, October 28th at the RAC vs. Campbell.
385,000: The Eagles' competition and practice pool at the RAC holds 385,000 gallons of water.
The Eagles open their home season Friday night at 6 p.m. against Campbell with a meet at the Recreation Activity Center on Akins Blvd. Georgia Southern has installed pink lane lines and the team will wear pink caps to help raise support and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.
