STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern women's soccer closes out the 2011 regular season with a match at Davidson on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The Eagles, locked into the seventh seed in the 2011 SoCon Tournament, look to spoil Davidson's chances for a top-four seed in the upcoming tournament.
Georgia Southern enters the tournament tune-up match following a loss on Sunday at Samford. The Bulldogs clinched the league championship in the match with a 1-0 win over the Eagles. By earning a berth in the 2011 SoCon Tournament, GSU snaps a four-year postseason drought that dates to the 2006 season.
The Eagles are 6-9-2 overall with a 4-5-1 mark in league play. Junior Courtney Collins (Mason, Ohio) has seven goals to lead the Georgia Southern offense which is averaging 1.24 goals per match. She ranks fifth in the Southern Conference at 0.41 goals per match. Alex Murphy's (Cincinnati, Ohio) total of six goals ranks second on the team, while senior Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.) has three goals with six assists this year.
Goalkeeper Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.) has been a stabilizing force for the Georgia Southern defense, making 62 saves including a career high 11 against College of Charleston. Merson has four shutouts this season and is holding opponents to an 1.31 goals against average.
Davidson sits in fourth place in the league standings and needs a victory to lock-up the fourth seed in the SoCon Tournament which guarantees a home match. The Wildcats are 8-8-2 overall and 6-4-0 in league play. Freshman Becca Fisher has seven goals to lead the Davidson offense which has been shutout just three times this season, most recently against Samford, 2-0, last weekend.
