Antalya, Turkey - Former Senior Women's Administrator and Associate Athletics Director Brenda Carter teamed with Heide Orth of Germany to win the ITF Super Senior Doubles World Championship (Women's 65) on Saturday, defeating no. 1 seeded Ellie Krocke (The Netherlands) and Jacky Boothman (Great Britain), 7-5, 6-0. Carter also competed in the Women's 65 Singles draw, advancing through two rounds of competition before falling to her doubles partner, Orth, in the quarterfinals.
In team competition, Carter joined Betty Wachob (Panama City, Fla.), Cathie Anderson (Del Mar, Ca.) and Judy Louie (Corona Del Mar, Ca.) to finish third in the World Team Championships (Women's 65). Carter served as captain, playing No. 1 Singles on a USA team that won consecutive 3-0 matches over South Africa, Canada and Sweden, before falling 1-2 to Great Britain. USA defeated Germany 2-1 to bring home the bronze medal.
The ITF Seniors/Super-Seniors World Team Championships is the most coveted team event on the ITF Seniors circuit where the nation's top tennis players in age groups from sixty to eighty competed against 153 teams from 27 countries around the world.
"It was a tremendous honor to represent my country and the USTA against the best players in the world," said Carter. "The atmosphere was incredible and the level of play was extremely competitive. Heide is a great partner to have on the court. Our games really came together and we were able to accomplish what we set out to do."
Following her role as faculty chair of athletics (1990-92), Carter served as Georgia Southern's first Senior Woman Administrator (1993-99) and was an assistant professor in the mathematics and computer science department. Since playing her first USTA national tournament in 2001, she has amassed 29 national championship titles and held the No. 1 ranking in the U.S. in her age group in both singles and doubles from 2005 through 2008. In 2007, Carter won the ITF Individual World Championship (Women's 60's) and was ranked the No. 1 singles player in the world for women aged 60 and over.
In 2004 she was elected into the Georgia Southern Athletics Hall of Fame and is presently ranked no. 1 in the United States in women's 65's singles and doubles.
