Gainesville, Fla. - Sophomore Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) rebounded from a first set loss to defeat Florida International's Rita Maisak 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round Friday at the 2011 ITA Southeast Regional Championships. The top players from 19 Division I schools in Georgia and Florida converged on the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex this weekend for a chance to advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in November.
The Eagles were represented by Garrido and junior Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.), both competing in the singles and doubles draws at the regional championships. Garrido fell to South Florida's Ecaterina Vasenina in the round of 32 following her opening round victory. Maffett dropped her first round match to Georgia State's Ecaterina Vasenina and the Eagles tandem fell to Georgia's Kate Fuller and Lauren Herring in the opening round of doubles play.
"Competing in the regional tournament was a good experience for Natalie and Paola," said Head Coach Amy Bonner. "Facing such tough competition in each event and each round we play will help prepare us for the spring."
The Eagles return to the courts for their final event of the fall season this Friday, October 28 when they travel to the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center for the Clemson Invitational.
