Savannah, Ga. - Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving split its opening meet of the 2011-12 season on Saturday, defeating SCAD (131-74), but falling to Clemson (121-79) at the Chatham County Aquatic Center.
The Eagles recorded eight top-3 finishes on the day, including a first place finish in the 200 Free Relay (1:41.07) by Elaina Lanson (Wadsworth, Ohio), Devan White (Kennesaw, Ga.), Katie Crider (Bloomington, Ind.), and Emily Fell (Brunswick, Ga.).
Lanson placed second in the 50 Free (23.99) to earn one of four second-place finishes on the day. White teamed with JoAnn Filipov (Watkinsville, Ga.), Megan Ostrom (St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Megan Heller (Lawrenceville, Ga.) to earn runner-up honors in the 200 Medley Relay (1:50.52), while Amber Juncker (Bogart, Ga.) placed second in the 500 Free (5:14.03) and Courtney Harrison finished second in the 200 Breast (2:27.02).
Juncker added two third place finishes on the day in the 1000 Free (10:45.46) and the 400 Individual Medley (4:39.23). Ostrom also placed third in both the 200 Fly (2:14.28) and the 200 Breast (2:28.50), while Heller teamed up with Abigail Lavallin (Bridgwater, Somerset), Rachael Stockwell (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Pirie Humphries (Athens, Ga.) to earn a third place finish in the 200 Free Relay (1:47.00).
"I thought we had some very good performances today, being our first meet of the season," said Head Coach Nate Kellogg. "Our nerves definitely showed in a few races, which we expected with such a young team, but the first meet is all about using meets like this as learning experiences, dealing with nerves, and shaking off the rust. Our goal moving forward is to be more consistent, but overall, we are pleased with how we raced and competed."
The Eagles return to the water on Friday, October 28 at 6:00 p.m. when they face CCSA opponent Campbell in their first home meet of the season at the Recreation Activity Center (RAC) in Statesboro, Ga.
