Eagles Start 2011 Where They Left Off in 2010

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Georgia Southern Swimming and Diving team (6-2) defeated two of its three opponents in the Florida Gulf Coast quad meet after a seven-week layoff from competition. The Eagles defeated Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) foes Liberty (214-76) and Radford (220-80). Florida Gulf Coast, playing host to the 16-event meet at the FGCU Aquatics Center, topped Georgia Southern (236-64).
"We came out and raced very hard and our divers competed very well," said Head Coach Nathan Kellogg. "Because of the hard training we have been doing, we are pretty close to where we should be. I think we surprised ourselves on how fast we swam coming off intense training."
Georgia Southern achieved 10 top-three finishes in 10 separate events. Devan White (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Courtney Harrison (Greenville, S.C) led the Eagles, each placing in the top three in three events.
White swam to third-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (25.52) and in the 100 free (54.94). Harrison finished in second place for the 100 breast (1:07.21) and third in the 200 breast (2:27.39). Both White and Harrison also earned top-three finishes as members of relay teams.
White anchored the 200 free relay team, consisting of Caroline Bevillard (Bishop, Ga.), Ali Campbell (Ft. McMurray, Alberta, Canada) and Laurie Stephens (Atlanta, Ga.), to a third-place finish (1:41.71). Harrison swam the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay to help the Georgia Southern "A" team, which included Lindsay Goodman (Knoxville, Tenn.), Kristen Haudenschild (Woodbridge, Va.) and Bevillard, finish second (1:51.53).
Goodman achieved her second top-three finish with a third-place effort in the 400 I.M. (4:42.06) while teammate Pirie Humphries (Athens, Ga) tapped the wall for a third-place time in the 200 fly (2:13.52).
In the diving competition, Georgia Southern's Sara Meisenhelder (Carmel, Ind.) placed second on the 3-meter board (239.40) while recording a third-place finish on the 1-meter board (219.37).
This is the second time Georgia Southern has defeated Radford and Liberty this season as the Eagles outscored both teams in the Highlander Invitational to close the 2010 portion of the season.
Georgia Southern will continue its four-week tour of the CCSA on January 15th when the Eagles travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., to race against Limestone and Gardner-Webb. With four-straight meets in Janauary, the schedule will help Coach Kellogg and his staff evaluate the team as it prepares for the CCSA Championships at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga., Feb. 17-19.
"The next three weeks are going to tell us who we are and who we want to be," stated Kellogg. "We face four out of the top five teams during this four-week stretch. Our goal is to get better every week, and obviously, stay healthy, so we are prepared for the CCSA Championships next month."
