JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Hunter Norton (Evans, Ga.) gave the Eagles a lead which they held until the 72nd minute, but Jacksonville evened the match and needed just one shot in overtime to take the 2-1 victory over Georgia Southern Tuesday night (September 7).
Norton gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, breaking through at the top of the box and putting the ball into the left side of the net. Georgia Southern held the lead until there were less than 20 minutes left in the game.
Daniele Campailla evened the match for the Dolphins in the 72nd minute, pushing a shot from 15 yards out underneath the diving Ryan Platt (Preston, England), who made eight saves in goal for the Eagles. Just over 20 minutes later, Darko Karamatic ended the match with a goal from the top of the box into the right side of the net to steal the victory.
Jacksonville out-shot the Eagles 22-11, including a 15-6 margin in the second half, desperately trying to find the equalizer. The Dolphins put 10 shots on goals, with Platt saving eight shots, but the junior transfer couldn't keep the clean sheet.
The Eagles will return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 10, taking on High Point in the Flash Gordon Soccer Tournament in High Point, N.C., at 7 p.m. The Eagles will conclude the tournament with a match against Radford on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m.
