STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team officially ushers in the 2010-11 season under first-year Head Coach Nick Zieziula at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, September 24-27.
The 43rd annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships marks the oldest fall collegiate tennis tournament in America. This year's tournament will showcase participants from 37 schools.
“It is a privilege to be able to open up the season at such a historic tournament. The draws are traditionally very strong at the Southern Intercollegiate and I'm sure this year will be the same,” said Zieziula. “I feel that we have had a great month of preparation and I know that we are all anxious to get on court and start competing.”
The Eagles will compete against participants from 36 schools including Alabama, UAB, Campbell, Central Florida, Chattanooga, College of Charleston, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Elon, Florida, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Liberty, Lipscomb, LSU, Memphis, Mercer, Miami, Middle Tennessee State, UNC Wilmington, Radford, Samford, South Alabama, South Carolina, South Florida, Stetson, Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, USC Upstate, Vanderbilt, Winthrop and Wofford.
The tournament field will be divided into three singles divisions and two doubles divisions. There will be a maximum of two singles consolation rounds for those knocked out in the main draw first round, but no doubles consolation.
The traveling squad for the Eagles consists of two seniors and two sophomores. The Eagles will be led by seniors Thomas Bekkers (Antwerp, Belgium) and Alex Yuille (Epsom, England), while Juan Manuel Melian Puigventos (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) and Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands) will also make the trip.
The final draw for the tournament is expected to be released Thursday afternoon.
