SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On the final day of the USC Upstate Fall Classic, the Georgia Southern Women's Tennis tandem of Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Paolo Garrido (Vigo, Spain) captured the 'A' doubles title.
“I'm really proud of the team for competing hard all weekend,” said Head Coach Amy Bonner. “It was good for us to get a look at what we need to improve on before our next tournament. We got some good experience with this tournament and hopefully it will prepare us for the spring. Overall, it was a good weekend for us.”
Beavers and Garrido teamed up to cruise through three rounds of doubles action to reach the final on Sunday. The pair faced off against Campbell's Lisa Sutton and Borislava Nikolova, defeating the Camels, 8-6 to capture the title. The title was the first for newcomer Garrido.
In the finals of the 'B' back draw, Sydney Brown (Johns Creek, Ga.) and Courtney Chaney (McDonough, Ga.) fell to Wofford's Julia Paulson and Cathrine Sarnqvist 8-1.
Moving her way through the back draw of 'A' singles, Garrido defeated Mary Gallegos of Anderson College on Saturday only to take a win over Kelsey Love of Lenior-Rhyne, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the final on Sunday. Garrido challenged Paulson of Wofford, forcing a super tiebreak, but fell, 3-6, 6-3, 3-10. Paulson also defeated Alessandra Dzuba (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) in the back draw before facing Garrido in the final.
In the 'B' flight, after defeating teammate Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) on Saturday, Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) faced off against Agatha Palider in the semifinal. Palider took the match, 6-2, 6-2.
Competing in the main draw final of the 'C' flight, freshman Naomi Bollaci (Atlanta, Ga.) defeated two opponents in straight sets before facing Mackenzie Swindall of Kennesaw State in the final. Bollaci fought hard but suffered a loss to Swindall. In the back draw of 'C', Chaney won the title behind a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lucia Leahy of Presbyterian College.
Georgia Southern will return to the courts with the SpringHill Suites Invitational, October 15-17. Mercer, South Carolina State and Western Carolina will travel to Statesboro, Ga., for the three-day tournament.
